The Question

A friend of mine would love to holiday in Lake Garda. Could you please advise if Desenzano is suitable for someone with walking difficulties, or indeed, could you recommend a resort which is?

Looking forward to your reply.

Many thanks.

The Answer

You have steps, slopes and hills here as in other towns and as a walking local you would need to go up a rather steep slope every once and a while. This steep slope I am talking about separates the main central area from the train station and some residential areas among other things. Check the first video in this article about the Desenzano Train Station. But as a tourist on a down town hotel you wouldnīt need to go up there because if you are down town in the central area, you have the shopping street, the Tuesday market, many hotels, the lake, the beach and the restaurants all on equal plane more or less. Also if you are going to use the trainstation the bus goes from the centre to the trainstation and costs only 1 Euro.

The central walking area has flat tiles. You have the roadstones typical of Italian small roads (which is only in a few places, mostly the roads are normal tarmac). The stones are mostly bound to a few roads. See here some pictures where you can see the downtown pavements and a of the downtown central road Photos of Desenzano

The beaches are not made of sand but gravel however, see here: The Beaches of Desenzano That is typical here because the Lake Garda is a "rocky" area and is often artificially made with gravel.

Italy is better equipped than I thought regarding things like access. For example the busses here have a ramp for wheelchairs and many times I see electrical elevators on the side walls where there are steps in new buildings. I think that the access is a law thing in all new buildings, older buildings and hotels are not always supplied though. When going for a hotel, ask for access information and a good bathroom as sometimes they are very small. I know personally that it is law for all new hotels to supply fully made rooms for handicapped people and it could be a good idea to check those out as their bathrooms have more space and the shower is on the floor level.

I hope this helps.

Hermann
