The Question

Hi, I am from Texas and will be making a trip to Desenzano and wondered what is the best airport/city to fly into? I need whatever is going to save the most time. Thanks

The Answer

You can choose from all of the Milano and all of the Verona airports.

Using a Rental Car

If you have a rental car the drive is from 30 minutes up to 2.5 hours. The airports that are closest are the Milano Bergamo and the Verona Brescia Montichiari. These two are however small airports and a limited amount of Airlines use it, mainly low cost airlines such as RyanAir. Milano Malpensa is the main airport, British Airways, AllItalia etc. From Malpensa to Desenzano del Garda is around 2.5 hours drive.

Travel by public transport

If you will use public transport then just go to the Airportīs city Central Train station and take the train from there to Desenzano del Garda.

- Milano Central Station to Desenzano del Garda is around 1.5 hour by train and a one way ticket costs around 10 euros.
- Verona Central Station to Desenzano del Garda is about 25 minutes by train and a one way ticket costs around 2-5 euros.(See comment below if going to Verona)*

My experience

I have personally only used Milano Malpensa and used both a rental car and the public transport. Both were simple and painless. The flybus takes around 50 minutes from the Airport and the Milano Central Station and is 5 euros pr. person. I have however returned a rental car on the Verona Brescia Montichiari airport which Ryanair uses. I took a taxi back from it to Desenzano centre for just over 50 euros and it was only around 20-30 minutes. That airport is very small though and the only one I would consider taking taxi from as it is closer to Desenzano then it is to Verona.

*NB! Regarding Verona and public transport. Trains stop running from Verona to Desenzano around ten oīclock in the evening. The trains from Milano have longer operation hours. See here TrenItalia.it for the official Italian Train System.

I hope this helps you in your planning.

Best regards,
Hermann
